Names of over 4,000 Bru voters settled in Tripura deleted from Mizoram electoral rolls

Mizoram election department, as on Monday, has deleted 4,554 names of Bru voters, who have settled permanently in neighbouring Tripura while 5,848 Bru names are yet to be deleted from the state voters’ lists.

Officials said that while 4,083 Bru voters’ names have been deleted through corresponding requests for deletion received from the Tripura State Election Commission, 471 names of Bru voters have been deleted based on scanned forms received from the Tripura SEC.

Majority of the Bru voters’ names deleted are from Mizoram-Tripura-Bangladesh border Mamit district’s 3 assembly constituencies – Hachhek, Mamit and Dampa.

At least 3,859 Bru voters have been deleted from the 3 assembly seats within Mamit district till date while 463 and 232 Bru voters’ names have been deleted from assembly constituencies of Kolasib district and Mizoram-Bangladesh border Lunglei district in south Mizoram respectively.

Officials said that efforts have been made to delete all the names of Bru voters, who have settled in Tripura following quadripartite agreement reached between the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mizoram and Tripura state governments and various Bru organizations in the relief camps in Tripura in January, 2020.

“We are making efforts to delete all the names of Brus who have settled in Tripura, whose names are still in the state voters’ list, before the general election to the Mizoram legislative assembly, due by the last part of the year” a state election department official said.

As per the quadripartite agreement signed between the Centre, the governments of Mizoram and Tripura and leaders of Bru organizations on January 16, 2020, all the Bru voters who are to be settled permanently in Tripura would be enrolled in the Tripura electoral roll and the Election Commission of India also had issued instructions on the issue.
