The number of Myanmar nationals seeking refuge in Mizoram has spiraled to 25000, with the fresh influx of around 8000 refugees over the past few weeks.
According to the latest report, 7,714 people from Myanmar’s Chin state have sought refuge in Mizoram’s Siaha district while 5,450 people have so far taken shelter in Lawngtlai district alone.
As many as 1,769 Myanmar refugees are currently taking shelter in Lunglei district, out of which 535 are children. Most of them have already received their first dose jab while 29.97 percent have received second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the latest report from Lunglei district administration.
However, refugee camps are lacking in basic amenities. Drinking water, blankets, and health care for children, pregnant women, and injured civilians are all in limited supply. The refugees are relying on civil society organisations, Individuals, churches, civil society organisations, and to an extent, the state government of Mizoram, who are providing assistance and making donations to help run these camps.
The majority of Myanmar nationals who have fled to Mizoram are from the Chin ethnic group, which shares ethnic relations with the Mizos.
