With clearance from the Election Commission of India (ECI), the Mizoram Scholarship Board today initiated the disbursement of tribal scholarships into the accounts of beneficiaries.
Mizoram Scholarship Board Secretary Dr. PL Ramliana stated that the disbursement commenced at 12 PM and over Rs. 10 crores have been disbursed. He further stated that the second installment of scholarship is first given to students residing within Mizoram.
Notably, the development has come after number of agitations held by the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Mizoram’s biggest students’ body for three days demanding release of the 2nd installment of the pre and post matriculation as well as Tribal scholarship.
Demanding the same, they held a hunger strike on Thursday and later called off the hunger strike after the state government assured disbursement of scholarships following approval by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Earlier, the scholarship board officials said that the money was not disbursed due to the imposition of the model code of conduct in view of the state assembly polls held on Nov 7 and that they were waiting for the Election Commission’s approval.
