Under the new policy, those using electric vehicles, which in Aizawl, are mostly electric scooters will be allowed to ply on the city roads daily.
A huge public uproar has erupted in Mizoram following the adoption of the Electric Vehicle Policy 2024 with effect from September 10, 2024.
Under this policy, those using electric vehicles have been given special preference over those vehicles with internal combustion engines.
It may be mentioned here that for a decade now, Aizawl has been practicing the odd-even number policy for vehicles to ply on the roads, however, under the new policy, those using electric vehicles, which in Aizawl, are mostly electric scooters will be allowed to ply on the city roads daily.
Social media platforms have been flooded with netizens criticizing the Government’s preference given to electric vehicles which allows them to ply on the roads each day.
Meanwhile, the lone electric scooter agent in the state, MST Motors has also been on the receiving end of public trolling with derogatory captions written over their new flyer for various electric scooter models.
The Mizoram government has given preference to electric vehicles for registration purposes as well over those with internal combustion engine and is planning to give them reservations at selected parking spaces within the city.
