Mizoram Election Commission ready for counting of votes on Monday

The Mizoram Election Commission is fully prepared for the counting of votes for the Mizoram Assembly Elections on Monday after the ECI rescheduled it from Sunday.

Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Madhup Vyas spoke to Northeast Live about the preparedness and the measures taken up so far for the smooth conduct of the process.

Sharing details, CEO Madhup Vyas said, “Yesterday ECI has accepted the request and changed the day for counting of votes from December 3 to December 4. So, this has been welcomed by the civil society and the political parties. We are fully prepared for undertaking the counting of votes for the recently held polling for Mizoram Assembly elections. The counting will take place in 40 counting halls for 40 assembly constituencies. ECI has provided us 40 counting observers, so each hall will be supervised by the exclusive counting observer. These 40 counting halls are located in 13 locations. So each district has one location but considering the fact that Aizawl has 12 assembly constituencies, so having 12 counting halls in a single location, we have many logistical challenges, so in Aizawl district we have 3 locations.”

Elaborate security arrangements are also in place to ensure that the counting of votes concludes peacefully.

Regarding this CEO Vyas stated, “We have made full proof arrangements for maintaining law and order and smooth counting through Mizoram Police and 10 companies of CAPF. So, we are ready to go and we had an interaction with the political parties wherein I have appealed and requested for their support and cooperation for undertaking the counting smoothly in an orderly manner.”

Earlier, counting of votes for the Mizoram Assembly elections was supposed to be held on December 3, which falls on a Sunday. However, civil society organisations and political parties stiffly opposed this, since Sunday is considered to be a sacred day for Christians. They made a number of representations to the ECI seeking for rescheduling the date.
