C. Vanlalchhuana, brother of Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, and five others have been sentenced to one-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh each in a case of cheating and corruption by a Special Court (Prevention of Corruption Act) in Aizawl today.
The jail term would extend to 10 years if anyone of them are not able to complete the jail term and pay up the fine.
Special judge HTC Lalrinchhana yesterday convicted C. Vanlalchhuana, Saiaithanga, C. Rokhumi, Lalduhawma and P.C. Lalthazovi, all of them residents of Aizawl and K. Lalrawna of Myanmar border Champhai town (all under 58 and 86 years of age) for receiving compensation by using fake land passes, making fake village council land passes, and cheating the authorities.
They all received compensation to the tune of lakhs of rupees while acquiring land for the construction of the 60-megawatt Tuirial Hydro Electric Project undertaken by the North East Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) Ltd.
The accused have been sent to the Central Jail.
