Traffic congestion in Shillong: Min AL Hek believes flyovers could be the solution

Will Meghalaya government follow its neighbouring state Assam’s model of easing traffic in Shillong by constructing flyovers just as it has been done in Guwahati?

Well, Meghalaya cabinet minister AL Hek thinks that this perhaps could be the best solution to decongest the roads in Shillong.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Hek expressed grave concern over the rising traffic in the Meghalaya capital city and the harrowing congestion thereafter. He said that construction of flyovers would be a good idea to get rid of this.

Hek said, “Due to road congestion it becomes very difficult to move in Shillong. The road is very small and the number of vehicles are increasing every hour and not in a single day only, but the size of the road has remained the same. There is no scope for expansion also.

As a government we have to take some steps for construction of flyovers like it has been done in Guwahati. They (Assam Government) have constructed so many flyovers. If this is done, I believe the road congestion will be eased.”

Besides, the Meghalaya cabinet minister also expressed his opinion on how to curb the menace of unauthorized parking in the city which often leads to traffic snarls. Regarding this Hek stated, “The government is mulling to have the multi-level car parking space where there will be many layers of parking place so as to ease the traffic congestion arising out of unauthorized parking in the Shillong city. I have seen that people are buying cars but they do not have a parking space. So now the transport department has to issue strict instruction to anybody who is buying car without any parking space.
Without any permanent parking of their own, nobody should be allowed to buy a car.”
