Braving heavy rains, the students and faculty of Women’s College, Shillong came out in large numbers to take part in the silent procession seeking justice for ‘Abhaya’, the junior doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata who was raped and murdered on August 9.

Despite getting drenched in the rain, the students and staff of the College walked the streets of Shillong determined, holding banners that read “In Solidarity with Abhaya,”. They walked in silence expressing their grief and anger over the incident that has shaken the nation.

The rally was also aimed at raising awareness about the growing threat to women’s safety and demand justice for the victims of heinous crimes.

The procession started from the College campus at Upper New Colony, and passed through Laitumkhrah Point, Fire Brigade, Edmund’s College, Dhankheti and Don Bosco.

“Atrocities against women are on the rise and have become a menace. If India is to truly develop we would need a proper human resource and the government must ensure safety of women,” said a Professor of the College.
