CM Conrad Sangma said that the Government will not wait too long, and the money will be diverted to some other areas, like East Jaintia Hills

The proposed 108-km railway project from Shillong to Byrnihat may be cancelled, the Meghalaya Chief Minister informed on Thursday.

“The railways when it comes to East Khasi hills and Ri Bhoi section everything has been put on hold. There is an active talk with Government of India that the money that has been outlaid for this project will be diverted and put up for projects for other zones or other areas in the state which are open to the railway. A study is being conducted from Jaintia hills side,”CM Sangma added.

He said that the Government will not wait too long, and the money will be diverted to some other areas, like East Jaintia Hills, where studies are going on for railway projects.

“There is a possibility that Government of India will cancel this particular project to Shillong and the money will be shifted for other zones wherever the railway connectivity is possible,” CM Sangma added.

However, he said that the success of the project will largely depend on discussions with local leaders and different stakeholders.

Pressure groups have been opposing the project fearing that this would result in influx of people from outside.

Earlier, during the Budget Session of Parliament in February this year, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said that the 108-km Byrnihat-Shillong railway project was facing a lot of law and order problem.
