Postal Department to open 1,500 post offices in NE including 449 in Meghalaya

To increase postal services in Northeast, the Postal Department will open over 1,500 post offices in the region, including 449 in Meghalaya.

Speaking to the media, Subrat Das, Chief Post Master General, said that the department is targeting opening it within the next 3 months.

The Chief Post Master General noted that the new post offices will be the access point for India post payment banks so that the citizens of these areas will not only have the benefit of the universal financial enclosure but also have the benefit of direct benefit transfer.

Northeast has a total of 4134 post offices spread across every corner of the region.

The postal department has started the Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras to boost small traders and further promote the country’s exports.

“Another innovation that has been bought by the Government of India is Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras, where each post office is an export outlet for the products that are being generated in the rural economy. The post department becomes a very effective medium for integrating the rural economy with the export market at large, and our progress in that has been quite good. We have been booking a good number of articles at Lunglei in Mizoram, Agartala, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh,” the Chief Post Master General said.

He said that due to its low cost structure and simple process, the working of post offices is suitable for small and medium businesses.

The Indian Postal Service (North East Postal Circle) is celebrating World Post Day today and National Postal Week 2023, which started today and will continue till October 13.
