Mehtab Chandee Sworn in as Gambegre MLA, Meghalaya Achieves Milestone in Women’s Empowerment with 4 Women Legislators

Chandee said, "Gambegre is slightly more backward compared to other areas in the Garo Hills, I will address these pressing issues."

Mehtab Chandee Sangma, NPP leader and wife of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was sworn in as the legislator for the Gambegre Assembly seat today.

She was administered the oath of office by Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma in the presence of CM Conrad Sangma, and other senior leaders of the NPP.

After being sworn in as the legislator for Gambegre, Mehtab Chandee Sangma expressed her commitment to meeting the expectations of the people.

“Politics is very demanding, and I hope to live up to the expectations of the people,” she said.

Reflecting on her recent time spent in the constituency, Chandee said that Gambegre is slightly more backward compared to other areas in the Garo Hills emphasizing her determination to address these pressing issues.

“Basic infrastructure such as healthcare, roads, and electricity needs immediate attention. I will take up these issues and matters related to the public,” she added.

Speaking about the underrepresentation of women in politics, she said, “Women’s participation in politics has always been limited, but as equal participants in society, we must come forward and engage more actively. I hope that by stepping into this role, I can inspire more women to participate in politics,” said Chandee.

With this, the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly now has 4 women legislators. The other 3 women MLAs are- Ampareen Lyngdoh (Shillong East), Santa Mary Shylla (Sutnga Saipung), and Miani D. Shira (Ampati).

Mehtab Chandee, a medical professional, who contested the election for the first time won the Gambegre assembly by-election with 12,678 votes defeating political veterans like state BJP Vice President Bernard Marak, Congress candidate Jingjang M. Marak, Trinamool Congress candidate Sadhiarani M. Sangma and independent candidates Sengkrabirth Marak and Jerry A. Sangma.
