The Voice of People’s Party in Meghalaya had decided to stay in the Opposition. It was a clear and loud message from VPP president and Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit who prioritized on “own identity.”
Days after former Chief Minister and TMC leader Mukul Sangma batted for an United Opposition, the VPP president’s comments seem to be a sort of confirmation that the VPP has agreed to whatever Mukul Sangma had pitched for.
Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said,”“We are part of the alliance in the opposition. However, on all issues we will work. We are in the Opposition since we are not in the government; because we want to maintain our own identity. So in case there is any issue that we are not in agreement, it will not affect us. “
When asked if an offer comes from the NPP to the VPP to be part of the government, the VPP president affirmed,”No…No…No. We will never accept even if it comes. We are firm to be in the Opposition.”
It may be mentioned that the VPP has won 4 seats in the recently concluded Meghalaya assembly elections as a debutant after the party’s inception in 2021.
Quite confident after his party’s performance in the assembly elections, VPP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit is already on the ground for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) polls and 2024 plansthe Lok Sabha elections.
Briefing in this regard, Basaiawmoit said,”We are preparing, we are going to the ground. We will field candidates in all the 29 constituencies and we will put up a MP candidate (LS Polls).
When asked if the MP candidate has been finalized, he said,”Now we have not decided. As of now there is no one who can claim that he is a VPP candidate, either in MDC or MP.
The VPP president also responded to a query as to what would be his party’s stand if any other regional party forms the government(in KHADC).
Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said,”If that is the case than it will be a totally different story altogether.
Q. Will conditions apply?
A. We will work based on conditions.
Q. So it means conditional support.
A. Ya Ya..”
