The Meghalaya Government would soon start installing Smart Meters that would replace the existing metres to measure electricity consumption and urged the consumers to cooperate.
State Power Minister AT Mondal said that the installation of smart meters under the Smart Meter Project is not something the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) wanted to suggest, but rather a requirement imposed by the Union Power Ministry’s funding system.
Stating that smart meters are being rolled out nationwide, not just in Meghalaya, Minister Mondal said that the smart meters are essential for accurately monitoring energy consumption and specifying energy losses.
“The smart meter is not something MeECL wanted to give but it has become mandatory under the Ministry of Power’s funding pattern. It is not only being installed in Meghalaya but across the country,” said the Minister.
He further urged the consumers to go ahead with the installation of smart meters as it will be challenging for the government to pinpoint and address areas where energy losses are occurring.
“We will request our consumers to go with it because, without the smart meters, it will be difficult for us to monitor where the leakages are there and how the proliferation of energy is happening. All these we have got to see,” the Minister added.
