Meghalaya to Miss 2024 Deadline of Providing Tap Water to Households Under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)

Meghalaya government is likely to miss the 2024 deadline for the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) implementation, with the JJM dashboard reporting only 81.36 per cent project completion meaning almost 20 per cent work is still pending.
As per inputs, Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) implementation is yet to begin in 11 villages, while 2,431 villages remain under progress. The JJM is to provide tap water to every household.
While speaking to media, PHE Minister Marcuise N. Marak said, “Most of the projects are completed. Some of the completed projects need to be looked after by the Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSC).”
He also stated that the delay in the completion of the projects has been caused by land and forest clearance issues and the projects also have many components like distribution tanks and treatment plants.
“However, the government is trying its best to complete all projects under the JJM scheme by December,” he added.
Despite forming VWSCs in 6,443 villages, with 6,50,914 total households. As of now, at least 5,29,567 households have been connected with tap water.
Meanwhile, Marak announced his plans to review PHE projects, including JJM, in the three divisions of Mairang, Nongstoin, and Mawkyrwat during a site inspection on November 28. He aims to assess progress firsthand and ensure that all works adhere to specifications.
The minister also said that the state government will soon introduce the ‘operation and maintenance rules’ for all Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department projects, pending cabinet approval.
PHE Minister Marcuise N. Marak emphasized the importance of these rules for sustaining current and future projects.
