The Meghalaya government has prepared the road map for the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the state.

With over 18,000 teachers in the state untrained, Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma said that the government will introduce another 100 smart training rooms as well as smart class rooms, as the government is looking forward to having a massive, extensive orientation course for the teachers before the start of the next academic session.

He added that the training sessions will be held in both online and offline mode and will be provided to all the teachers, starting at the elementary level.

Sangma said the department is coordinating with the National Open University (IGNOU) and the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) to provide training to the untrained teachers.

Under NEP 2020, 4-year degree courses are introduced in all the colleges in the state.

The new education policy received immense criticism from the students and teachers opposing the 4-year degree course, citing lack of infrastructure, teachers and colleges to meet the requirements of NEP 2020.

However, Rakkam A. Sangma noted that other states have already implemented NEP, and if Meghalaya is left behind, it might create problems for students during the admissions process who want to pursue higher studies outside the state.

Earlier, Sangam affirmed that 99 percent of colleges in the state have begun the process of implementing 4-year degree courses under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
