Meghalaya to Implement Roster System for Teacher Recruitment in Government-Aided Schools and Colleges

Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma announced on Monday that the state government plans to implement a roster system for teacher recruitment across all government-aided schools and colleges in the state.

Addressing the pressing need for staff in higher education, Minister Sangma disclosed that there are currently over 800 vacant teaching positions, with more than 400 of these vacancies scheduled to be filled in the first phase of recruitment.

This decision follows recent demands and ultimatums, notably from A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK), urging the state government to retrospectively enforce the reservation roster system across public sector organizations, departments, and educational institutions. ACHIK’s call specifically emphasized the need for adherence to the State Reservation Policy, which mandates 40 percent reservation for the Garo community, 40 percent for the Khasi-Jaintia Hills communities, 5 percent for other tribes, and 15 percent for the general category.

The State Government’s move to extend the roster system to educational institutions is part of its broader commitment to upholding the State Reservation Policy, originally established in 1972. This policy has recently sparked discussions, particularly from voices in the Khasi Hills, advocating for revisions to reflect current demographic and societal dynamics better. Meanwhile, members of the Garo community have expressed concerns over their historically limited access to the reserved quotas, citing a need for more awareness and procedural adherence during previous recruitment exercises.

Minister Sangma’s announcement signals a proactive step by the government to ensure equitable representation and opportunities in Meghalaya’s educational sector. It aligns with ongoing efforts to address historical grievances and streamline recruitment practices across the state.
