This decision, made by the state party unit, will now be sent to the All India Trinamool Congress Chairperson, Mamata Banerjee, for final approval.
Meghalaya Trinamool Congress led by former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has endorsed Sadhiarani M. Sangma, the wife of Zenith Sangma and the lone female Member of the District Council (MDC) from the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), as the party’s candidate for the upcoming Gambegre by-election.
This decision, made by the state party unit, will now be sent to the All India Trinamool Congress Chairperson, Mamata Banerjee, for final approval, said Dr Mukul Sangma today.
In response to queries about the party prospects in the upcoming Gambegre by-election, Dr. Mukul Sangma said that despite the high-profile nature of the NPP’s candidate and the party’s desperate efforts to secure the seat, the ruling NPP would receive a “befitting reply” from the people of Gambegre.
Speaking to Northeast Live, Sangma said, “I have been following the whole developments in the constituency. What caught my attention is that the whole state missionary had been directed towards that consistency including Chief Minister Conrad Sangma himself. It is subject to verification that a significant number of households in Gambegre have recently received Corrugated Galvanised Iron (CGI) sheets, a lightweight roofing material. But the question is whether these CGI sheets were provided under any government scheme or if they were purchased and distributed directly by the party.”
“What is happening in the constituency? It is nothing but the Desperation of the party in power specifically NPP to see that they win. But People will give them a befeting reply,” Dr Mukul Sangma added.
Meghalaya is gearing up for a high-profile contest with the bye-election to the Gambegre Assembly constituency set to be held in the coming days.
While, Mehtab Chandee, has emerged as a front-runner to secure a ticket of NPP to contest the bye-election, the Congress exuded confidence and said that it will field a strong candidate against Mehtab Chandee for the seat.
The Gambegre Assembly seat fell vacant after the resignation of sitting Congress MLA, Saleng A. Sangma, who was elected as the Member of Parliament from the Tura parliamentary seat in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year.
