In a welcome development, the first-ever meeting between the State government and the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) on the relocation of the Harijan colony was held on Wednesday.
In the meeting, the State government proposed to provide alternative accommodation to 342 families within the European Ward of the city.
HPC Chairman Gurjeet Singh said that he will discuss the proposal with the residents of the colony and discuss the same with the government on April 25 when the next meeting will be held.
The HPC had earlier rejected all efforts of relocation. It had argued that the land was promised to the current families by former CM Williamson Sangma.
The residents of the Harijan Colony had moved to the courts opposing the relocation. bid.
