Meghalaya Police’s warning: Remove modified exhaust pipes from vehicles or face action

The Meghalaya Police is on a mission to curb the menace of noise pollution. Unwarranted customization of vehicles and 2-wheelers with modified exhaust pipes have prompted the police to act tough especially in capital Shillong.

A statement issued by the East Khasi Hills district SP S Nongtnger mentioned, “vehicles and 2-wheelers with modified exhaust pipes of high decibels create much disturbance by emitting loud noise and therefore have become a social nuisance.”

The East Khasi Hills SP informed that the Shillong Traffic Police has been conducting vigorous checking drives for necessary action against the violators. The statement further said that 755 such cases have been detected. A whopping Rs 7,68,900 has been collected as fine and that only during the month of July.

As per the statement, 17 vehicles were detected with modified exhaust pipes and that action has been initiated as per the law.

The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has further appealed all vehicle owners to remove the retrofied exhaust pipes and replace them with the original ones.

The STP has warned that stern action will be taken against violators and that the drive against modified exhaust pipes would continue.

In a Tweet, the Meghalaya Police said, “Did you know unauthorised accessories can reduce the lifespan of your vehicle? The modifications such as exhaust pipes in cars and bikes, also cause nuisance. Please avoid them at any cost.”
