The Meghalaya police have successfully neutralized the purported attempt to regroup the once-dreaded GNLA militant outfit.
The West Garo Hills police launched a counter-insurgency operation soon after media reports claimed that a message was received through WhatsApp claiming that a person called Jingjang D. Shira was the new Garo National Liberation Army Chief Executive Director and that 500 cadres were being trained in Rengdim in West Khasi Hills bordering East Garo Hills and South Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya. A photograph of Jingjang D. Shira was also shared.
Based on the information, an investigation was initiated, and it was learned that three persons, Namchang Momin, Adot M. Sangma, and Silwit R. Marak, were involved in the alleged GNLA regrouping.
Accordingly, a counter-insurgency operation was launched, and while the police team was on the way to Darangagre village, information was received from Kherapara outpost that all three persons had surrendered at the outpost.
The team then returned to the Kherapara outpost and interrogated all three people.
Subsequently, a house search was conducted at the residence of Namchang Momin, and several incriminating materials like camouflage uniforms, boots, and other items were recovered and seized.
Meanwhile, it has also been ascertained that there is no GNLA regrouping effort as such, and the three persons allegedly committed the act to create a fear psychosis in the general public to extort money from businessmen and others.
