Meghalaya: Partial restoration of vehicular movement through diversion along NH-6 begins

A day after a portion of the National Highway-6, connecting Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram collapsed owing to landslide, one-way movement of small vehicles began through a diversion road today.

A portion of the NH-6 had collapsed near Meghalaya’s Lumshnong owing to landslides caused by thunderstorms and incessant rains triggered by Cyclone Remal.

Following the collapse, traffic was stopped on both sides of the road and people were asked to avoid unnecessary travel.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills Abhilash Baranwal, said, “East Jaintia Hills has been badly affected, several roads including the National Highway has been blocked because of several landslides and mudslides. Simultaneously numerous trees have uprooted and they have fell down on the roads, as a result of which road blockade was caused. However, our teams are on the ground, whether it is NHAI or the PWD, or civil defence, everyone is trying to clear the roads at the earliest possible, so that minimum inconvenience is caused to the public.”

“Simultaneously, damage has been reported to several houses in many villages. Unfortunately, there has been one death. Some minor flooding has been reported from Borghat area, but district administration along with all other line departments and other stakeholders, we are working round the clock,” the East Khasi Hills DC further said.
