The announcement was made during a public meeting held in Gambegre, where CM Sangma said that the decision was driven by public demand
Putting all speculations to rest, the National People’s Party (NPP) today announced Mehtab Chandee, wife of party National President and Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma, as the candidate for the by polls to the Gambegre seat.
The announcement was made by CM Sangma during a public meeting held in Gambegre, where he emphasized that the decision was driven by overwhelming public demand within the constituency.
The Gambegre Assembly seat fell vacant after the resignation of sitting Congress MLA, Saleng A. Sangma, who was elected as the Member of Parliament from the Tura parliamentary seat in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year.
The by-poll is expected to be held within six months, though the Election Commission is yet to announce the official date
During the public gathering, Conrad Sangma highlighted the significance of the Gambegre constituency and reassured voters that if they choose his wife as their representative, they will gain direct access to the Chief Minister’s office, promising to prioritize the constituency’s development. He further stated that the NPP is committed to working dedicatedly on the region’s development, which he indicated is long overdue.
Mehtab also met the people of Gambegre and had the opportunity to disuss the issues of the area.
The decision to field Mehtab Chandee Sangma as the NPP candidate follows the party’s election committee meeting on June 27, where her name was shortlisted among four potential candidates. Her nomination was confirmed after extensive consultations and considering the strong demand from the Gambegre electorate.
