Meghalaya: GSMC Urges Govt to Address Poor Road Conditions and Civic Amenities in South Garo Hills

Marak urged the State Government to take immediate action to repair and maintain the roads which are in a hazardous state

The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) expressed frustration over the deplorable condition of roads and lack of civic amenities, in Chokpot Sub Division under South Garo Hills in Meghalaya.
The chairman of GSMC, Chokpot Regional Unit, Lusai Ch Marak on Monday has written to the state government regarding the extremely poor conditions of the roads in Chokpot Civil Sub-Division, South Garo Hills.
In the letter, Marak stated that the poor road conditions in the area were a long-standing and no visible effort from the concerned authorities to address it.
“The road leading to Chokpot, one of the oldest routes in the district, is in an alarmingly dilapidated state, filled with large potholes, mud, and debris, making it almost impossible for vehicles to pass through, especially during the rainy season. This severely affects daily commutes and poses a serious risk to the lives of the people”, said Marak.
“This severely affects daily commutes and poses a serious risk to the lives of the people. The situation is particularly concerning when it comes to medical emergencies”, Marak added.
He further added, “For instance, if a pregnant woman needs urgent medical attention and is referred to other districts of Garo Hills for higher evaluation, the journey becomes perilous due to the road conditions. Such negligence can lead to tragic outcomes that could otherwise be avoided with timely road maintenance and infrastructure improvements.”
Marak also expressed concern about the negligence of development in particular in South Garo Hills region especially Chokpot.
He said that residents of this area are often left feeling like ‘second-class citizens’ due to the lack of essential services, proper infrastructure, and the absence of effective governance. The bad road conditions are only a part of the broader problem, added Marak.
Apart from bad road conditions, Marak highlighted that the Chokpot is facing poor network connectivity that continues to isolate the region.
Marak urged the State Government to take immediate action to repair and maintain the roads which are in a hazardous state. He demanded equal attention, care and swift response from the government.
