These skill labs will be set up in key district headquarters such as Shillong in East Khasi Hills, Tura in West Garo Hills and Nongstoin in West Khasi Hills.

The Meghalaya government is planning to set up three skill labs in the state to help students gain additional skills for job opportunities in foreign countries, Health Minister Dr. M Ampareen Lyngdoh informed on Sunday.

These skill labs will be set up in key district headquarters, such as Shillong in East Khasi Hills, Tura in West Garo Hills and Nongstoin in West Khasi Hills.

While speaking to media, Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “Meghalaya’s students, eager to pursue education and careers abroad, are struggling to clear the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), a critical gateway to international opportunities. Despite their fluency in English, many face challenges in meeting the demanding standards of this proficiency test, which affects their chances of landing jobs in high-demand fields like nursing, hospitality, and paramedical professions.”

“These labs will provide specialized training in English and other languages like Korean and Japanese, equipping students with the linguistic skills necessary to excel in international exams,” Lyngdoh said.

Lyngdoh also emphasized that the initiative will prepare Meghalaya’s workforce to meet the global demand for skilled labour.

“With countries like Korea, Japan, England, and Singapore facing acute manpower shortages, these skill labs will enhance students’ qualifications, giving them a competitive edge in the global job market. This effort underscores the state government’s commitment to creating pathways for its students to achieve success on the international stage,” she added.
