Meghalaya Govt to set up Border Outposts, Step up security along Assam-Meghalaya border

A week after the Mukroh firing incident along the Assam-Meghalaya border, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today said that his cabinet will soon finalise the list of areas where Border Outposts (BOP) will be set up and the manpower and infrastructure issues along the border would be addressed to ensure the safety and security of the people living along the border.

The CM chaired a crucial meeting with leaders of all political parties and MLAs from bordering areas.
Briefing newspersons after the meeting, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the agenda of the meeting was to brief all the stakeholders of the meeting about the incident last week and the entire sequence of events. The Meghalaya Chief Minister also informed the leaders and MLAs about the steps taken by his government as well as the roadmap for the future course of action.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed that deliberations also centred on the situation in the border areas and the areas of differences as well, where there is a need for taking steps to ensure that there is no tension in such areas.
Besides, Sangma said, “We also sought suggestions from everyone and took note of these. Good suggestions have come from everybody. All of them have expressed concern over the situation. We have unitedly condemned this incident.”
Conrad Sangma affirmed that the government will take all necessary steps to ensure safety and security of the citizens in the border areas is maintained.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister also informed that internet ban has been lifted in the 7 districts with effect from today. “We are now allowing the movement of vehicles as police patrolling continues at all levels,” Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said.
Sangma also appealed to all leaders and MLAs present in the meeting to work together and ensure that normalcy returns.
