Meghalaya Govt To Conduct Surveys for Accurate Hawker Count Amid Relocation Efforts

This statement contrasts with claims made by hawker representatives, who claim that there are more than 5,000 hawkers in the state.
Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Urban Affairs, Sniawbhalang Dhar today addressed the ongoing hawkers’ relocation issue, revealing that the government has official records of only 600-700 registered hawkers.
This statement contrasts with claims made by hawker representatives, who claim that there are more than 5,000 hawkers in the state.
Deputy Chief Minister Dhar assured that the government is committed to addressing the relocation concerns in a fair and just manner. To ensure accuracy, the government plans to conduct periodic surveys to better document the actual number of hawkers operating in the region.
“No, there are 600-700 registered hawkers as per office records.
There might be slightly more than the registered number, but we need to conduct regular surveys to confirm,” said Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
The Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister also acknowledged that suitable locations for relocation are still being identified, emphasizing that dialogue and cooperation will be key to finding an appropriate solution.
Addressing the hawkers’ requests for better relocation options, Dhar assured them of the government’s support.
“They requested a good space, and I assured them not to worry, I am with them,” said Dhar.
“I asked for their cooperation with the government. We will work to find a suitable location. Be patient and support the process. You may not get exactly what you want, but through dialogue, we can secure a good place,” he added.
It may be mentioned here that aimed at further beautification and decongestion of the iconic Shillong city, the Meghalaya government is closely following up with its plan and intends to make Khyndailad popularly known as Police Bazaar as hawkers free.
