Meghalaya girl, friends face racism in Mumbai; called “China ka maal”

The northeastern region of India has been subjected to racism in the mainland India because of its distinctive facial features.

In another incident of racial discrimination, a Meghalaya-based make-up artist and her friends were racially discriminated against by a man in South Mumbai on Saturday.

The Meghalaya girl shared the horrifying incident on her social media account.

The incident took place when the Meghalaya girl, along with her roommates, was spending time together in a popular place in South Mumbai.

While leaving the place, a Maharashtrian man passed a racist remark, calling the Meghalaya girl and her friends as “China ka maal.”

Another girl sitting beside the racist guy smirked and turned her face away.

The scene got intense when the Meghalaya girl and her group of friends questioned the racist guy for making such a racial comment. The guy apologised and said “Sorry sister”, however, in a dismissive tone.

Later, both groups engaged in a heated argument, and the racist guy and his friends hurled abusive words on the Meghalaya girls.

The people from Northeast India have been prone to many racial attacks and even racist killings in the past as well in present.

During the COVID pandemic, the Northeast Indians faced severe discrimination from the mainland Indians due to their mongoloid features.  The Northeast Indians were referred to as Chinese spreading corona.

Many derogatory racial terms like ‘Chinese’, ‘Chinky, and ‘Momo’ are used against the Northeast Indians.

In 2020, a Manipuri girl was humiliated when a middle-aged man riding a scooter spat paan(betel juice) on her and called her “Corona.”.

Manipuri actress Lin Laishram was also subjected to racial discrimination by two men who called her “Coronavirus” during covid 19 period.

In 2014, Nido Tania, a college student from Arunachal Pradesh studying in Delhi, was beaten to death following a fight with a shopkeeper and other men in South Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar market. The men shouted racial slurs at him and made fun of his dyed blonde hair.

The student died of severe lung and brain injuries.
