Meghalaya Games: CM Conrad inaugurates new stadium in Tura, stage set for Prez Murmu’s visit

Preparations are afoot for the iconic Meghalaya Games that begins January 15. It will be a high profile launch as President Droupadi Murmu will be inaugurating the 6-day sporting extravaganza during her 2-day visit to the state.

Seen as an oppurtunity for the budding sportspersons to excel in their respective disciplines, the Games is expected to witness the participation of more than 3000 athletes.

To make this event a grand success the Conrad Sangma government is leaving no stone unturned. In fact the Meghalaya Chief Minister today inaugurated the Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma Athletics Stadium is Tura, where the players will compete in the Track and Field events. The stadium is named after Garo Freedom Fighter Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma.

Sharing his thoughts in a social media post, Chief Minister Sangma said, “After much anticipation and efforts to see the project through, we are ecstatic to inaugurate the Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma Athletics Stadium (Track & Field Stadium) in Tura, named after the great Garo Freedom Fighter of our state.

Happy to inaugurate this project on time for the #MeghalayaGames 2024 which will be held for the first time in Tura. The Track & Field Stadium is the first state of the art athletics stadium in Tura and will be blessed by the participation of our athletes from all over the state in the upcoming Games.

To take the state a step ahead in terms of sports infrastructure, several other key projects are also coming up in the state. The Meghalaya Chief Minister regarding this said, “Similarly, many projects for Track & Field, Natural and Artificial grounds, Indoor & Outdoor Stadiums with built in sports infrastructure are coming up in different parts of the State. These infrastructures that are being constructed will make Meghalaya one of the top states in Sports infrastructure in the next 3 to 4 years. I dedicate the projects to all our athletes and sportsmen of our state.”

Besides, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma also reviewed the preparedness ahead of President Droupadi Murmu’s visit, for the inauguration of the Meghalaya Games. Taking stock of the progress, Chief Minister Sangma urged the concerned departments for timely completion of works and make the event a big success.

In a post on X, he said, “Ahead of Hon’ble President of India, Smti Droupadi Murmu ji’s maiden visit to Tura for #MeghalayaGames 2024, conducted site inspection of the P A Sangma Stadium with Hon’ble Ministers & MLAs, DC, officials of Sports Department, @MeghOlympics and @MeghalayaPolice.

This will be the first time that Meghalaya Games will be held in Tura. The 4th edition of the Meghalaya Games were held in Shillong in May 2022.
