Meghalaya: Cattle semen bank established at ICDP in Shillong
This facility will help in breed improvement apart from increasing cattle population and enhancing milk and beef production.
In order to facilitate the up-gradation of the local cattle population of Meghalaya through artificial insemination, Central Semen bank has been established at the Intensive Cattle Development Project in Upper Shillong.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday visited the state of the art facility which is working towards the collection, processing, storage and distribution of semen extracted from elite improved breeds of bulls.
This facility will help in breed improvement apart from increasing cattle population and enhancing milk and beef production for which semen will be collected, analysed and distributed to Stockman centres across the State.
Attached with the Central Semen bank is a Bull farm where elite bulls of popular exotic breeds such as HF, Jersey and indigenous breeds such as Red Sindhi, Ongole, Tharparkar, Gir and Sahiwal are maintained for semen collection. Noteworthy to mention here is that five pure HF bulls have been recently imported from Germany to improve the local cattle population.
Taking to the media, CM Conrad Sangma said that he is impressed by the high-end technology used in the centre and also the facilities available therein. The Meghalaya CM further said that the centre will go a long way in the up-gradation of the local cattle population in the state.
