Shangpliang, in his resignation letter, has accused the state BJP president Ernest Mawrie of nepotism

Senior BJP leader and former Mawsynram MLA, HM Shangpliang has resigned from the primary membership of the party. He has tendered his resignation to Meghalaya BJP president Ernest Mawrie today.

In his resignation letter, Shangpliang has accused Meghalaya BJP president of nepotism and wrote, “…as long as nepotism prevails within the rank and file of the State BJP continues under the leadership of the President of the State BJP, it will hinder all possible steps of the dedicated and loyal party men to freely exercise their minds and grow in the party”.

He further lamented the fact though he was made the party spokesperson along with other ex-MLAs who had joined BJP and played an active role on behalf of the party as a nominated member of the state political parties to discuss the contentious issue of State Reservation Policy, “there are various issues that I had repeatedly raised to the State President which are pertinent to the growth of the Party in Meghalaya particularly in the rural areas and had suggested steps to be taken, keeping in mind the poll debacle the Party faced in the recently concluded Polls in Meghalaya”.

He said that he had reminded the state president of “the necessary action to be taken to strengthen the party at various levels in view of the growing internal conflicts within the party in the state”.
Shangpliang has complimented the Dipayan Chakravarty, Vice President of Meghalaya BJP, for the role he played in getting Shangpliang to join BJP. He thanked the party members at the state headquarter for their support.

He also thanked Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister for Minority Affairs John Barla, BJP’s Meghalaya in charge Rituraj Sinha, Meghalaya minister and BJP leader AL Hek and BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai for their support and for campaigning for him durimg the Meghalaya polls, 2023.

A retired nominated IAS officer, Shangpliang had joined BJP in November 2022.

He was appointed the Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya’s Education Department in June this year.

Just a week back, Meghalaya Deputy CM and NPP leader Sniawbhalang Dhar had said that Shangpliang wants to join NPP. Shangpliang’s supporters too are expected to quit BJP but it is still not clear if he will be joining NPP and if yes then when. There is also a buzz that Shangpliang will join NPP and get the Lok Sabha ticket for the Shillong seat. Lone Rajya Sabha MP and NPP’s Meghalaya president WR Kharlukhi had however, not given a confirmation regarding Shangpliang joining NPP and getting ticket for the Shillong parliamentary seat.
