Big loss TMC, BJP and Congress who fielded veterans
In a resounding victory for ruling National People’s Party (NPP), Mehtab Chandee, party candidate and wife of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, has emerged victorious in the Gambegre assembly by-election with 12,678 votes.
Chandee, a medical professional, who contested the election for the first time, won the seat defeating political veterans like state BJP Vice President Bernard Marak, Congress candidate Jingjang M. Marak, Trinamool Congress candidate Sadhiarani M. Sangma and independent candidates Sengkrabirth Marak and Jerry A. Sangma.
This win of NPP comes as a big blow to Congress who won the seat twice in 2018 and 2023. For TMC’s Sadhiarani M. Sangma, wife of three-time former Rangsakona MLA Zenith Sangma, it is a heart break for the third time in a row. She had contested from this seat in 2018 and 2023 too, but lost.
In this bypoll, she lost the seat by 4594 votes. She secured 8084 votes.
Congress candidate Jingjang M. Marak lost the seat by 4983 votes. He secured 7695 votes.
BJP’s Bernard Marak secured only 710 votes.
Chandee’s victory marks a significant milestone for the NPP, further consolidating the party’s presence in the region and ensuring a full majority for the party in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly. It also serves as a major boost for Conrad K. Sangma’s leadership, especially as the NPP continues to gain momentum in Meghalaya’s political landscape.
The election for the seat was held on November 13, 2024 as the then sitting MLA Saleng Sangma won the Tura Lok Sabha seat and moved to the Parliament as MP.
