Meghalaya: Big boost to sports infra; P.A. Sangma Sport Complex to be inaugurated today

It will be a big boost to nurture the budding sports talents in Meghalaya, as the P.A. Stadium will be inaugurated today by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. Originally set up in 2006 by the Late PA Sangma, the sports facility was named as the M.P. Stadium. But 15 years down the lane, the stadium had to go renovation and upgradation.

Funded by the Ministry of Minority Affairs and the Meghalaya government, the iconic stadium that hosted Tura Football League and the Subroto Cup, underwent upgradation at a cost of over Rs 127 crore.

Considered to be a boon of excellence in engineering, the stadium has a capacity of 9500 spectators and is known to be the nation’s largest pre-engineered composite football stadium. The P.A. Sports Complex in Tura has two large indoor halls, which will include a 25m x 20m swimming pool, badminton hall of 6 courts, a Table Tennis hall, 4 Squash Courts, Cafeteria, office and administrative spaces.

The construction of the complex began in January 2021, and despite the challenges of the pandemic. However, credit goes to the State Sports Council of Meghalaya and the construction agencies who have made the football stadium available for use in less than 2 years.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will formally inaugurate the P.A. Sangma Sports Complex this evening at 3PM. A host of events including an exhibition match between NEUFC and Meghalaya, cultural show, drone show and fireworks display will be held to mark the occasion.
