Meghalaya: 59 newly elected MLAs take oath as Members of 11th Legislative Assembly

59 newly MLAs today took oath as Members of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Among the key faces who were administered the oath of office by Protem Speaker include:
Conrad Sangma and NPP Chief who won from the South Tura seat
NPP’s Prestone Tynsong, winner from the Pynursla seat
BJP’s AL Hek who has won from the Pynthormukhrah seat
Meghalaya TMC president and winner from the Nongthymai seat, Charles Pyngrope
Lahkmen Rymbui of UDP who has won from the Amlarem assembly constituency
Miani D Shira of the TMC and daughter of former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma, who won from Ampati
Metbah Lyngdoh, of the UDP who has won the Mairang seat
Ampareen Lyngdoh of NPP, winner from the East Shillong seat
Rupa M Marak of TMC who won the Dadenggre seat by defeating Corad Sangma’s brother James PK Sangma
Ampareen Lyngdoh of NPP, winner from the East Shillong seat
Congress’ Saleng Sangma who won the Gambegre seat
UDP’ Kyrmen Shylla, winner of the Khliehriat seat
Banteidor Lyngdoh of PDF from the Mawkynrew seat
Sniawbhalang Dhar of the NPP, and winner from the Nartiang seat
UDP’s Mayralborn Syiem, winner from the Nongpoh seat
Former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma who has won from the Songsak seat
BJP’s Sanbor Shullai, winner from the South Shillong seat
UDP’s Paul Lyngdoh who won from the West Shillong, among others

Meanwhile, the stage is all set for the swearing in ceremony of Conrad Sangma as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya for the second consecutive term. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will grace the swearing in ceremony to be held at the Raj Bhawan tomorrow.

Notably, the NPP emerged as the single largest party in Meghalaya by winning 26 seats out of 59.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged only two seats. Subsequent, to this the NPP formed a post-poll alliance with the BJP (2 MLAS), and also taking on board, 2 HSPDP MLA, as well as 2 Independent MLAs.

With numbers reaching 32, crossing the majority mark of 31, Conrad Sangma had staked claim before the Governor to form the next government.

However, in a significant turn of events the UDP with 11 MLAs and PDF having 2 MLAs extended their support to the NPP, taking the total strength of the coalition to 45.
