LoP and Fmr Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma’s Warning to All Parties ahead of 2028 Assembly Elections

Leader of the Opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and TMC leader Mukul Sangma has issued a warning that all political parties, including Conrad Sangma-led ruling National People’s Party (NPP), will face significant challenges in the 2028 State Assembly elections.

Speaking to the media, Sangma hinted at internal unrest within the NPP, suggesting that the party’s recent manoeuvres to increase its legislative strength from 26 to 31 seats reflect underlying instability.

In response to a recent statement by NPP National General Secretary and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who predicted the opposition Congress will be wiped out in Meghalaya, Sangma defended his former party stating that it is easier said than done to claim that a political party will be wiped out from a state, but ultimately, it’s the people who watch, judge, and decide the mandate.

He further cautioned the ruling NPP, suggesting that the situation could turn against them.

“For any political party, it is easier said than done to claim that a political party will be wiped out from a state. It doesn’t happen because it is ultimately the people who will watch, judge and decide and keep the mandate. Therefore, under the given situation, it may be just other way round, the writing is on the wall. NPP is in the ruling government and the present dispensation of the government is led by NPP. They had 26 MLAs, they became 28 and now they become 31. We all know, how did they manage to come up from 26 to 31. It can also be interpreted as a desperate move of the party, keeping in mind the current situation which threatens their very capability of the present ruling dispensation,” said Mukul Sangma.

“Every political party, including NPP will face challenges. Many things will unfold in due course of time, you will see what happens to NPP,” he added.
