Lok Sabha Polls-Meghalaya: NPP affirms strong ties with BJP

First Published: 2nd April, 2024 20:40 IST

We have a lot of respect for the decision taken by the BJP at the Centre, to respect the alliance that we have, said NPP spokesperson HM Shangpliang.

Days ahead of the Lok Sabha election, the National People’s Party (NPP) leadership in Meghalaya has once again reiterated about the strong bond between both the parties.

Speaking on the sidelines of a joining programme at the party headquarter in Shillong, NPP spokesperson HM Shangpliang affirmed about his party respect for the leadership of the Saffron party for its decision to back the NPP in the elections and further work for development.

Shangpliang said, “See there is nothing new to say that BJP and NPP are in alliance in the NDA. Now, when the NDA was formed the NPP was already in alliance with the BJP in the Centre and you could also witness the same in the state. With the MDA 1.0 we had the BJP, the NPP, and other parties like the UDP which had formed the government. Similarly again in MDA 2.0 the BJP is part of the alliance in the government. SO therefore when the BJP did not set up a candidate for the MP election, I must say that we have a lot of respect for the decision taken by the BJP at the Centre, for the decision taken by the high command of the BJP to respect the alliance that we have, so as to enable the NDA candidate, to have an easy victory.”

However, Shangpliang reiterated that the NPP shall continue to raise issues that pertains to the hopes and aspirations of the people in the state. In this regard the NPP leader mentioned about issues like-inclusion of Khasi, Garo language in the 8th Schedule, as well as implementation of ILP in the state.

“But having said that there has been instances where the NPP has also raised issues relating to CAA, has raised issues relating to ILP and therefore it is not (right) to say that BJP and the NPP are the same. The NPP stands for the people of the state, there are local issues for which the NPP stands for. We are fighting for the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo language in the 8th Schedule and shall continue to do so. We are also pursuing the resolution passed by the Assembly on ILP. Therefore because of the wisdom of the leadership in the NPP, the CAA has been exempted in the state.

Therefore the alliance that we have with the BJP is that we respect each other and therefore we look forward for this alliance to move forward in the days to come and bring further development for the betterment of the state,” Shangpliang further said.
