A delegation of the Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) today met Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to pursue for their demand of including Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The meeting assumes significance since it comes after the KAS sought a response from the Union Home Ministry on October 6.
KAS President DRL Nonglait sharing details of the closed door meeting said, “He (Conrad Sangma) has made his assurance, he has even sought our cooperation in preparing the follow up letter. He said that in the next week he will send the letter to the Prime Minister or the Union Home Minister.”
The KAS also pressed for inclusion of Khasi language as one of the official languages in the state apart from English.
Nonglait said, “The delegation of the Society had a meeting with the Chief Minister and we had a detailed discussion on two important issues. One issue is our demand for making the Khasi language one of the official languages of the state of Meghalaya. As of now under the Meghalaya Language Act 2005, the Khasi language and the Garo language have been made associate offical language. What we want to make is Khasi as one of the official languages of the state, I mean together with English.
The Chief Minister has assured us to look into very carefully and he has also entrusted the department concerned to look into it and to brief him about the details of the existing act and also the provisions made in the Indian Constitution, to make any language of the language as one of the associate state languages.”
