The Meghalaya government’s move to start a peace dialogue with the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) militant outfit has got a fillip with the Centre appointing an interlocutor.

Former East Khasi Hills DC, Peter S Dkhar has been appointed as the Interlocutor for the proposed peace talks between the HNLC and the Government of India.

This was confirmed by the Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui.

Dkhar’s name was suggested by the State Government and the Centre has cleared it.

It was also informed that Retired IPS official AK Mishra, Advisor NE, Ministry of Home Affairs, will coordinate from the Centre on the peace process.

It may be mentioned that the outlawed outfit HNLC which has been operating in Meghalaya has expressed its willingness to come to the mainstream and its readiness to talk with the Government of India without any pre-condition and has decided to give peace a chance once again in the state.

This indeed is a crucial development after the peace process derailed following the alleged fake encounter of HNLC general secretary Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, who was assigned to carry forward the talks with the Government of India.
