Meghalaya police have sounded a cyber fraud alert in the state as fraudsters are impersonating DGP Idashisha Nongrang in a bid to deceive people and extort money.
Taking to social media, Meghalaya Police has issued an alert and urged people to be vigilant and not fall for such scams.
“Scammers are sending emails/messages that appear to be from the Desk of the DGP, Meghalaya, attempting to deceive people and extort money,” the Meghalaya Police wrote on its social media handle.
The scam centres on sending out counterfeit summonses, falsely accusing recipients of visiting illegal websites and issuing threats of legal action.
These deceptive communications are intended to intimidate victims into paying money to avoid alleged criminal charges.
Police have urged the people to remain vigilant and to not fall into such scams.
“Do not fall victim to such scams! We urge you to remain vigilant and sceptical of such messages,” the police statement added.
In response to this threat, Meghalaya Police have urged citizens to verify the legitimacy of any suspicious communications. They can do so by contacting their nearest local police station or calling the emergency number 112.
