Meghalaya Election Department implements ‘ERONet’ to detect duplicate voters

With Assembly elections due next year, the Election Department of Meghalaya has started running the state’s voter list through the Electoral Rolls Services Net or ‘ERONet’ to detect duplicate, dual or bogus voters by analysing similar entries, photos and names.

The move comes in the wake of allegations of massive number of dual voters in the state’s electoral roll.

For this, the state election department has implemented deduplication software ‘ERONet’ to check the duel entry.

Chief Electoral officer, FR Kharkongor said, manual enrolment has phased out and now they have upgraded to the ERONet system which has inbuilt checks and balances as well as the deduplication software. He further added if a name is registered in more than one place, then the system itself will restrict a dual entry.

People living in the border areas usually possess dual voter IDs in order to claim benefits from both Assam and Meghalaya governments.

However, with the introduction of ERONet, the election department is contemplating on solving the issue of dual voting.

Over 21 lakh electorates will decide the fate of candidates in the 2023 Assembly polls in Meghalaya.
