Cyclone Remal impact: Heavy rainfall, storm batters Meghalaya, 1 dead

A total of 134 persons have been affected due to the calamity, the Meghalaya Disaster Management Authority has informed.

Along with the rest of the Northeast, normal life was severly affected in Meghalaya following incessant heavy rainfall since Monday.

One person lost his life while at least 7 others were injured in multiple incidents of landslide in the state.

The other statistics include-
Villages affected- 17
Houses damaged- 29
Infrastructure damage- 3
Human lives lost- 1

As per information, one person died after a wall of a house collapsed at Sutnga Weilong. 2 others were also injured in the incident. At 4 AM another landslide was reported from Mawlai Bypass, where 1 person was injured and was admitted to the NEIGRIHMS. Another landslide was reported from Mawkynroh Bypass this morning. 4 persons were injured and have been shifed to NEIGRIHMS.

Meanwhile, severe storm affected several households at Nonglang, Rangmaw, Laddommawiong, Sohdyniang, Diwian Mawiong.

Multiple landslides have also been reported from different parts of the state.

As per information shared by the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority, 1 school was damaged due to cyclonic storm under the Kharkutta block in North Garo Hills district. 22 houses were also damaged in areas falling under the block.

2 houses were also damaged at Rongrong Bolsongchok under Songsak Block in East Garo Hills. Strong winds also uprooted trees, snapped off electric wires in the area.

1 pubic road was also damaged due to landslide at Tyrsad road under Mawphland block.

The Sonapur Tunnel has also experienced mudslides due to the incessant heavy rainfall.

The clearing work is already under way. East Jaintia Hills police has advised the Commuters to find an alternative route and drive cautiously.

Authorities in the East Garo Hills speaking to Northeast Live informed, “Power line damage at several places are being restored. Forest, PWD and civil defence volunteers are on ground to clear falllen trees. Few villages have been impacted in terms of house damages. However, exact numbers are yet to come.”

It was only yesterday, that the Meghalaya CM had reviewed the overall situation and preparedness in view of Cyclone Remal. During the review, the CM had directed the respective district administrations to remain alert and be prepared to respond to any crisis.
