Meghalaya: CLP leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh slams Centre for being slow to implement ILP

Meghalaya Congress legislative party (CLP) leader, Ronnie V Lyngdoh today slammed the Centre for taking too long in examining the demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.

Lyngdoh termed it as unfortunate, saying, “May be we are a small state and we do not matter much politically. If just the demands of big states are addressed and the demands of small states are not met, it is really bad, and the entire concept of cooperative federalism is destroyed.”

When asked about his views on Centre taking long time to examine the issue, Lyngdoh said, “There is no problem in examining that if the demand for ILP will benefit the state or not. Before acceding to the demand, it is better we look into all aspects of it rather than regret later on. I think it is good that it is being examined now so that means it is being seriously thought of.”

Lyngdoh further said, “We are a very microscopic population, so there is this genuine fear of being overwhelmed by the majority population.” As a result, we should investigate all aspects to ensure that if we do implement ILP, it will be beneficial to the state rather than detrimental.”

Earlier, pressure group Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) and social organisations in the state have sought response from Chief Minister Conrad Sangma over alleged Centre’s delay in implementing ILP in the state.

HYC President Robert June Kharjahrin speaking to Northeast Live said, “Meeting with the Prime Minister, Home Minister have been held several times but there is concrete outcome again. We want to know on what aspect of ILP the Prime Minister, Home Minister is examining. Is it from the law perspective, or whether it will affect tourism. What aspect the Centre is examining. We would like to know from the Chief Minister as to what are the areas of concern that the Centre has.”
