Border Issue: Assam-Meghalaya Regional Committees to meet on Aug 25; key meet held in Guwahati

The Regional Committees formed by both the Assam and Meghalaya governments to resolve the decades long interstate border issue will be meeting in Guwahati on August 25.

This was decided in a meeting held at the Koinadhara Guest House in Guwahati where Assam Borders Affairs minister Atul Bora and Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong represented both the respective state governments.

Deliberations in the meeting primarily focused on disputed areas along the Ri Bhoi district in Meghalaya and Kamrup (Metropolitan) district in Assam.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed that deliberations centred on the Deshdoomreah sector, Borduar sector and Nongwah-Mawtamur sectors, which as per claims fall in the Ri Bhoi district.

Another meeting will be held to discuss matters pertaining to Block-II.

“After today’s meeting we have decided jointly that all the 3 committees from both the states will be meeting on August 25 in the evening. On 26th August morning we will go for site inspection. That we will do it for Deshdoomreah sector, because this area is very huge,” DCM Tynsong said.

DCM Tynsong appreciated the role of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in addressing the decades long border issue.

Assam minister Atul Bora said that it was also decided that a joint inspection would be carried out on August 26 in the disputed sites after the August 25 meeting.

In a tweet, Assam Border Affairs minister Atul Bora informed, that the Regional Committees will be visiting the West Dimoria region on Aug 26 which falls within the territory of Assam as per claims.

Atul Bora said, “The talks were positive. Both the sides want to resolve the disputes amicably. Our Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is very positive in addressing the issues. It is because of this that disputes could be resolved in many areas.”

Today’s meeting held in Guwahati assumes a lot of significance, since it is expected to give a new momentum to the ongoing efforts for resolving the boundary issue between both the states.
