The Meghalaya government has so far evacuated as many as 405 students in two days from the violence-hit Bangladesh through the India-Bangladesh border in Dawki.
Among the evacuated students, 80 are from Meghalaya, 131 are from other Indian states, 249 are from Nepal, and 8 are from Bhutan.
Speaking to the media, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed that the state government is in constant touch with the Indian Embassy in Dhaka.
“We are in constant touch with the Indian Embassy in Dhaka, and a senior IPS officer is directly in touch with the state to facilitate any kind of movement,” Chief Minister Sangma said.
Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about the Eastern Medical College, where 36 students from Meghalaya have been enrolled.
“Though the college authorities have said that the situation is under control there, the parents, however, are far from relaxed, and they are in constant touch with the government, trying to know about the wellbeing and whereabouts of their wards,” Chief Minister Sangma added.
Chief Minister Sangma further informed that the state government would soon develop an online portal for tracking the students from the state who are studying abroad.
“About the number of students studying outside the state, we only have the information that we have collected from various sources, but the exact count is not with us. Because of this, we have faced a lot of problems in the past as well. Hence, to deal with this issue, an online portal will be proposed in the next cabinet, where we will urge every student from Meghalaya studying outside to register themselves and share their contact numbers so that they will be in the government database,” the Chief Minister added.
“If in the future, such a crisis-like situation arises in any part of the world, then we will be able to contact our students immediately by pulling out their details from the database, and this should help us a lot in the future,” Chief Minister Sangma said.
Chief Minister Sangma, meanwhile, was quick to add that students and anyone from the state leaving outside should register at the proposed portal.
