Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma launched the MegARISE initiative aimed at ensuring Shillong’s water security through the Umiew Catchment program. In collaboration with Germany’s KfW Development Bank, this project focuses on ecological restoration and improving long-term water availability. With a budget of Rs 344 crores, MegARISE will protect and manage the Umiew and Ganol catchments, benefitting both Shillong and Tura.

Additionally, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Sustainable Land Management Meghalaya (SLM) Project, which seeks to empower farmers by promoting organic and agroecological farming practices.

The project will address certification challenges, boost productivity, and create stronger market linkages for organic produce. By integrating traditional farming methods with modern certification systems, the initiative ensures better access to larger markets for Meghalaya’s farmers.

Both MegARISE and SLM underscore the state’s commitment to ecological and economic sustainability. Supported by the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA) and the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA), the launch was attended by notable figures like Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, and Dr. Florian Wieneke of KfW Bank.
