The dome of the under-construction Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang in New Shillong township collapsed late on Saturday night raising question on the quality and design for the construction.
While no casualty or injuries has been reported in the incident that took place shortly after midnight, the Meghalaya BJP has reacted sharply to the development demanding a proper probe to track the anomalies.
The work on installation of the steel structure for the dome began 2 months ago. As per inputs labourers were working at the sight till 9 pm on Saturday.
The collapse of the dome will delay the project by over another 6 months.
Executive Engineer PWD Building division, Ransom Sutnga, who inspected the spot after the collapse said that faulty design led to the incident.
The project for construction of the Meghalaya Assembly building amounting to Rs 127 crore was allotted to Uttar Pradesh-based Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Limited and was supposed to be completed before the end of the year.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya BJP Chief Earnest Mawrie lashed out at alleged faulty design of the assembly structure for the incident.
Mawrie said that if terms and conditions of the contract are not met, the deal must be scrapped. Mawrie categorically stated that he will press for a CBI inquiry since the project is centrally funded.
The BJP Chief went on to say that he’s personally seen the work and terming it as substandard and proposed for safety assessment to be conducted.
Mawrie also noted with concern that the same company is working on other projects within the state.
Furthermore, when asked if the government should take responsibility while handing over such projects, Earnest Mawrie maintained that an enquiry will be conducted and that those involved will be punished.
He also pointed out that the news of the incident has reached the Centre which has enquired about the number of casualties.
