Northeast Live Impact: JNIMS, Manipur Admits to Bio-Medical Waste Mismanagement, Promises Corrective Measures

What can be termed as a major impact of Northeast Live’s sustained reporting, the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal, Manipur has admitted to past mismanagement of bio-medical waste and pledged to take corrective measures to address the issue and prevent further lapses.

The development comes after a delegation from the Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB), led by its Member Secretary Ksh. Siddharth Singh, visited the JNIMS Hospital today.

The team held a detailed discussion with JNIMS Director Dr. Longjam Usharani Devi, following the expiry of MPCB’s deadline for the hospital to respond to the allegations.

During the visit, Dr. Usharani Devi acknowledged the lapses and assured that steps will be taken to ensure proper segregation, storage, and disposal of bio-medical waste in accordance with environmental regulations.

“We have had consultations with the involved stakeholders such as the superintendent, sanitary supervisors, technical supervisors, and noddle officers for biomedical waste management. We have all sat together and decided to streamline the process because we have to accept that the disposal of general waste particularly was not done according to the rule
because of various problems. The site where the general waste need to be disposed of that did not allow us to do that thing during the COVID pandemic time. We have tried to resume that practice again now some waste was mixed up with the general waste which is supposed to be biomedical waste. That is our fault, I admit that fault, but it will be segregated out and will be disposed of at the proper places,”said the JNIMS Director.

MPCB Member Secretary Dr. W. Roshan stated that, as the Director of JNIMS had committed to properly incinerating the segregated bio-medical waste, no further action would be pursued.

He emphasized that an understanding had been reached between the two government institutions.

“JNIMS Authority has given us a commitment that they will take out all the waste that has been done in this area and they will segregate all the biomedical waste and the general waste in their separate streams. The biomedical waste will be treated in the incinerator and those waste that do not require incineration will be treated as per norms and regulations. After treatment, all this waste will be dumped at the landing site as per the central pollution control guidelines, all hospitals do not
require incinerator. There should be a common biomedical waste
treatment facility. All hospitals do not have this incinerator or captive facility. They have to enrol in this common biomedical waste treatment facility. Without this enrollment in this common biomedical waste treatment facility, they will not be given consent to operate or consent or authorization of the State Board,” said Dr. W. Roshan.
