Naga Women’s Union condemns killing of a woman from the community in Manipur

Naga Women’s Union strongly condemned the ‘cold blooded murder’ of a Maring Naga woman at Sawombung in Imphal East district on Saturday.

In a press statement condemning the brutal murder, Asha Wungnam, President, Naga Women’s Union, stated that the deceased Lucy Marem Maring of Narum (Beaulahram) Village, Chandel District was an active member of Maring Napuiya Yinglam (Maring Women’s Union) and a constituent unit of Naga Women’s Union.

The statement mentioned that the victim was forcefully apprehended by the Meira Paibis, whom the NWU considered were their friends in their search for peace. Sources said that she was handed over to the Arambai Tenggol (a private militia ruling the valley now) and was mercilessly murdered despite identifying herself as Maring Naga tribe.

Naga Women’s Union (NWU) stated that it has been wholeheartedly advocating for peace to be restored in the state since the start of the ongoing communal clashes. “The two warring communities have been repeatedly appealed and pleaded not to escalate the situation however despite our courtesy and concern shown towards humanity by the Union and Nagas as a whole, our appeals were taken for granted and our concerns were considered as threat”.

NWU President, Asha Wungnam stated that the Union has been traumatized many a times due to the recent riots between Kukis and Meiteis. The concerned authorities or groups must ensure that justice is brought to the innocent souls. Adding fuel to the burning flame is never encouraged, she said.
