The Joint Action Committee has also decided not to claim the body of Seigunlal Misao unless the culprits are nabbed
Massive protests erupted today in Manipur and National Highway No 2 or the Trans Asian Highway was blocked over the killing of a class 12 student at Motbung Model Village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district yesterday evening.
The protesters had blocked the Highway since Saturday evening but it was cleared today after Chief Minister N Biren Singh invited the Joint Action Committee (JAC) for a meeting on the matter.
The Joint Action Committee is currently holding a meeting with CM Biren Singh on the matter.
A class 12 student identified as Seigunlal Misao (17), appearing in the ongoing Higher Secondary Examination, was shot dead by unknown miscreants a few metres away from his residence when he was on his way to home after dropping off a friend in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.
Seigunlal Misao was a student at Damdei Christian College in Taloulong.
As per reports, the unknown miscreants, including a woman, fled the scene after committing the crime on a two-wheeler.
The victim was the only child of Lenkhothang Misao. His father is paralysed, and his mother is the sole bread earner of the family.
After the incident, police and the forensic department reached the spot. Kangpokpi police led by SP Th. Vikramjit Singh controlled the situation as huge enraged mobs gathered at Motbung bazaar, shouting slogans and disrupting the traffic flow.
The infuriated mobs and the deceased’s family, under the aegis of the Motbung Village Authority, decided not to claim the body unless the culprits are booked.
The mortal remains are currently kept at RIMS Mortuary.
On Sunday, a Joint Action Committee was formed in connection with the brutal murder of Seigunlal Misao. The Joint Action Committee too decided not to claim the body of Seigunlal Misao unless the culprits are nabbed.
Meanwhile, local MLA Haokholet Kipgen visited the victim’s family and assured them that he would stand by the people for justice.
The local MLA also convened a meeting with the district administration, police, and the JAC, including Motbung local bodies, at the residence of the village chief.
Speaking to the media, Motbung Village Authority member Lamkholen Singsit vehemently condemned the brutal murder of Seigunlal Misao and demanded the government and law enforcement agencies nab the culprits at the earliest while conveying that until the culprits involved in the brutal murder are brought to justice, agitation will be stirred up.
Singsit urged the state government to look into the family’s condition and arrange appropriate jobs for any eligible person in the family for their livelihood.
JAC Convernor, Paominlun Lhouvum also condemned the killing and termed it as ‘barbaric and cowardly.’
He said that the lightning bandh was imposed out of anger and to draw the attention of the government and said that it was not with the intent to inconvenience commuters.
With regard to the JAC demands, the convenor said that the demands include the earliest arrest of the culprits involved in the brutal murder of Seigunlal Misao, providing appropriate ex-gratia to the deceased family, and providing suitable government jobs to the deceased’s mother.
Earlier, the Thadou Students’ Association, Sadar Hills, and many other civil society organisations condemned the brutal murder of Seigunlal Misao and demanded the arrest of the culprits.
Further investigation is going on.
