Imphal witnessed a tense protest today as Scheduled Tribe students gathered under the banner of the All College Tribal Students Union, Imphal, to demand the immediate release of their scholarships for the academic year 2023-2024. The protest was sparked by frustration over a delay of more than two to three months in disbursing the funds.
A large number of students assembled and attempted to proceed a protest rally, voicing their grievances and urging the authorities to address their demands. However, their rally was halted by police personnel near the Raj Bhavan. During the ensuing scuffle, the situation escalated, prompting the police to fire tear gas shells to disperse the protestors.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Manipur Police, the Superintendent of Police (SP), Imphal West, and officials from the Tribal Affairs Department rushed to the scene to defuse the tension. They engaged in discussions with the protesting students, seeking a resolution to the issue.
Speaking to the media, Human Resource Secretary of the Union, Gaikhangning Panmei, said, “We are holding this rally because of the department’s delay in releasing scholarships for Scheduled Tribe students. This delay is unacceptable and has severely impacted the students”
The protest was temporarily suspended after the Assistant Director of the Tribal Affairs Department assured the students of signing a memorandum of agreement to address their concerns. Panmei further warned that if the agreement is not fulfilled, the protest would escalate until their demands are met.
