Both injured personnel were given first aid at a nearby Assam Rifles post by their medical team.
An Additional SP of Manipur Police and an Indian Army personnel were injured today at Nambol in Bishnupur District as protesters continue to clash with security forces in different parts of the valley districts of Manipur. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in connection with the incident.
Violent clashes broke out in parts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, and Thoubal Districts. Protestors pelted stones at security personnel, who responded with multiple rounds of tear gas shells, smoke bombs, and in some instances, live ammunition to disperse the crowd.
Between 11:30 AM and 12:00 PM today, a team led by the SP of Bishnupur District Police was clearing roadblocks in Keinou and Oinam. Upon reaching Nambol Thongkha, they were confronted by a large group of protestors who warned them not to proceed.
According to sources, the Additional SP was in dialogue with women and other protestors when an unidentified individual from the crowd assaulted him. A member of the Manipur Police QRT team was also injured during the incident.
Both injured personnel were given first aid at a nearby Assam Rifles post by their medical team.
Following the incident, an FIR was filed at Nambol Police Station for assaulting a police officer and violating curfew/prohibitory orders. Four individuals were detained on suspicion of involvement in the assault and for breaching the prohibitory order.
Meanwhile, in Khurai and Sangakpham areas of Imphal East, protestors dumped large amounts of earth on the roads to block traffic. Security forces attempted to intervene but were met with resistance. Tear gas and smoke bombs were used to disperse the protestors.
Similar scenes unfolded in other parts of Khurai, where stones were hurled at the forces. The security personnel responded with tear gas, smoke bombs, and live rounds to control the situation.
Unrest erupted in Imphal since the evening of 7th June following the arrest of Kanan Singh, a senior member of Arambai Tengol, by a joint team of Manipur Police and the CBI.
In response, Arambai Tengol called for a 10-day shutdown across the five Valley districts of Manipur – Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching, demanding the unconditional release of Kanan Singh. His wife has publicly denied the charges levelled by the CBI.
Protestors came out in large numbers supporting the shutdown. Roads were blocked by burning tyres, trees were felled, and mounds of mud were placed on the roads to paralyse traffic across various regions.
